"Retail" vs "Non-Retail" Cards?

Can someone help me? I am sorting through several thousand football cards and came across a situation. Several sets, such as 2002 Private Stock, 2002 Titanium, 2001 Dynagon, 2002 Pacific Exclusive, etc. have listings for "retail" and "a base set". the cards in each set are numbered the same. How does one distinguish between the sets? Thanks.
