No Wakefield Resigning

Wakefield has not be resigned yet to the Red Sox nor do they think it will happen. He has been posting ERA's over 5 in the past 2 years but, a knuckleball pitcher is great for eating up innings, and I think they could get a solid 10 starts out of him. What does everyone else think?

resignation

like you, my gut tells me they won't sign him and he'll go to a national league team near home (braves, marlins). however, i had a conversation with a fellow from new england who insists the red sox will bring him back for 1 or 2 years. usa today listed 3 pitchers who will compete for the 5th starter and wake was not on the list. i guess he will be used out of the bullpen and spot starts. we are less than a month from pitchers reporting so we should know soon.

not in the picture?

i read this as not a good sign for wake. now red sox g.m. is interviewed on the strength of the pitching staff and there was no mention of wakefield.

varitek, wakefield appear to be left out

that was the recent headline at the boston globe. in the article red sox gm ben cherington is quoted saying, 'they will continue to have private conversations, they will treat them with respect while being honest about our needs.' wake has been with the club since '95, when he got off to a 14-1 start. he could have a similar start against national league hitters!

Yeah, I am curious to see what happens with the situation. Wakefield is good, hopefully he jumps to another team.

hard to figure

here we are just a couple weeks from spring training and they haven't made a decission? i'd guess he would accept an invitation to spring training with a minor league contract. this way he could still make the roster should he have a great spring or someone gets hurt or has a terrible spring. i remember watching wake at spring training way back in 1996.

Taking that and what Valentine said earlier about how uncomfortable he'd feel asking Wake to compete for a spot on the team, it sure doesn't sound like Wake is returning to the RS.

Maybe the lack of word is because Wake is talking to other teams and/or mulling retirement.

“I just saw that (Jorge) Posada retired, you know it’s something that my wife and I need to talk about,” Wakefield said this week, taking a short break from organizing a weekend of fundraising events for the Space Coast Early Intervention Center. “I’d probably need to talk about it with my kids, too. Ultimately, I would like to obviously play for the Boston Red Sox for one more year and see where it goes.”
..................
“There have been a number of clubs who have called, who have an interest in signing me but I’m kind of just weighing my options right now,” he said, obviously waiting and hoping that Boston will make an offer.
...................
Wakefield didn’t say whether he would sign with a team other than Boston, but he didn’t rule it out, either.

“Hopefully, it doesn’t come down to the last hour,” he said. “But I’m not closing any doors.”

Wakefield’s eyes lit up when I suggested he go to the Mets where he could join R.A. Dickey and form a 1-2 knuckleball punch.

“That would be fun,” he laughed.

Agent: Tim Wakefield nearing decision about 2012

By the weekend, Tim Wakefield likely will decide whether he intends to pitch this season.

“We’re discussing the options — and he has some options — and over the next few days, we’re going to try to figure it out,” agent Barry Meister said by phone today. “These next few days is just a period of introspection, where he’s trying to decide what to do, whether to play, who to play for.”

Wakefield (AP photo) has stated his preference for pitching one more season for the Red Sox, but the team hasn’t reciprocated with as much enthusiasm. The 45-year-old right-hander has 200 career wins, 186 with the Red Sox. The club record of 192 wins is shared by Cy Young and Roger Clemens.

A few months ago, Meister said Wakefield may benefit from pitching in the National League if an opportunity with the Red Sox doesn’t present itself. Yesterday, he said Wakefield hasn’t ruled anything out, including possibly coming to camp with a team as a non-roster invitee.

“It’s all part of this broader trying to figure out what the next step is,” Meister said. “I’d say the next few days will tell the tale.”

I have a hunch the RS have privately told Wake he's not going to be asked back, thus giving him the opportunity to make his own announcement regarding his future before the team makes it official.

I also suspect that the teams that have shown interest in him probably want him for the same role he's played on the RS the last couple years. If so, then I think he should just retire. There is something to be said for maintaining a legacy, and retiring as a long reliever for another team wont help in that regard.

Wake a non-roster invite

Lucchino had no update on Jason Varitek and Tim Wakefield, but he confirmed both have been offered non-roster invitations to Spring Training. They'll each need to make a decision before pitchers and catchers report Feb. 19.

wakefield needs to report

thanks for the updates delar. no doubt wake wants to retire in the red sox uniform. he should report as a non roster invitee in hopes of making the staff. if he does not, he could retire, pitch at pautuckett or sign with another team. don't let them make you quit without a fight!

I agree Bill. I see little downside to showing up at ST. There's a small chance things might go his way, and if not, he can retire as a RS. I don't think he'll agree to go to the minors, though, despite a decent chance of being called up by the All Star break if he's throwing well enough.

Too bad Charlie got hurt. Seeing Haeger and Wake pitching back to back would've been a sight to see.

he's been a long shot before

and he's beaten the odds for his entire carreer. i can remember seeing wakefield at ft. myers in spring training '96, hard to remember the world without him being on the red sox roster. just 6 wins away from most wins by a red sox pitcher all time, he needs to report and fight for a spot. i might even be willing to share some corkscrew secrets.

is it transferable?

reports are wakefield has been offered a minor league contract with an invitation to spring training. if he does decide to retire rather than signing the minor league contract or signing with another team, i think he should transfer the contract to me. i've got my bag packed and will report early.

Wake's too young to retire.

quote:
Jamie Moyer has agreed to terms on a minor league contract with an invite to the Colorado Rockies' spring training, pending a physical.

The 49-year-old lefty didn't play last season after undergoing Tommy John surgery on his throwing elbow.

Moyer has played 24 major league seasons, starting with the Chicago Cubs in 1986. He went 9-9 with a 4.84 ERA for Philadelphia in 2010.

Moyer is 267-204 with a 4.24 career ERA.

Interesting write up on Wake's situation here.

knuckleball pitchers never quit

thanks delar, jamie moyer is one of my favorites alltime. if that's not enough inspiration, wakefield should remember hoyt wilhelm's quote when he was 2 weeks shy of 50. "i've never thrown the ball better and they are making me quit".

wake's had a couple of not so good years but his mechanical flaws could be fixed quickly. if i were wake, i'd catch up on my overdue petkp dues, grow some decent sideburns, order a couple cases of monavie and pack my bag.

Not so simple

So, as I now understand it, the ST invite is contingent on Wake signing a minor league contract. That must be what he's mulling over now. If he doesn't make the team, he'll have to pitch at Pawtucket. Not sure if he could just retire if he doesn't make it.
quote:
A lingering question is whether either of two long-time veterans, Tim Wakefield or Jason Varitek, will accept the minor-league deals that have been offered them, offers that contain an invitation to big-league camp. That is hardly an attractive proposition to two proud players who have worn the uniform longer than anyone else in camp, Wakefield since 1995, Varitek since 1997.

General manager Ben Cherington has maintained that the team has been clear to both players about their chances of winning a roster spot. With the Sox having signed free-agent catcher Kelly Shoppach to share time with Jarrod Saltalamacchia, and Ryan Lavarnway waiting in the wings, there would seem to be little prospect of Varitek winning a job.

With the back end of the starting rotation unsettled, Wakefield might be more tempted, although the Sox have given themselves plenty of options -- converted relievers Daniel Bard and Alfredo Aceves, along with veteran pickups Vicente Padilla, Aaron Cook and Carlos Silva. The Sox added another possible contender in 29-year-old Ross Ohlendorf, the former Pirate starter who has been slowed by back and shoulder issues the last two seasons.

Wakefield's agent, Barry Meister, said he had no comment on Wakefield Wednesday.
